Holding Drum Sticks

The Following was written by John McKail & adapted for this website by Robbie Crow.

Holding the Drum Sticks:
To play with good stick control and technique learning to hold drumsticks correctly from the beginning is essential.
The method accepted by most pipe band drummers is explained below. I firmly believe that a student can also hold their sticks in many different ways, as long as they feel comfortable and it does not impede their control or technique.

Left Stick:
The left stick should be held about three inches from the butt end between the thumb and forefinger and resting between the first and second joints of the third finger palm upwards.

Right Stick:
Grasp the right stick at the point of balance between the thumb and forefinger, palm downwards, the remaining fingers grouped loosely around it. The grip of the right stick should be like that of a hammer, but much less "tight".

The Beating Position:
Hold the sticks as instructed; immediately over your pad, drum or playing surface, but not touching it.
To play proficiently, diligent practice is essential, with a high degree of concentration.

Success will come with patience and hard work.
There are no shortucts to becoming a proficient drummer.

Careless playing cannot be tolerated.
Once bad habits are formed they are extremely difficult to eradicate.
